I took that picture.
Let me tell you a little story…
I’m an emerging photographer in South Florida, and today marks 3 years since I picked up a camera. Well, a proper camera. Sure I had a pocket Point and Shoot type camera for a little while but I honestly didn’t have the slightest clue what I was doing other than pointing and shooting. A few months before in February ‘08 I was looking at making a jump over the Atlantic for my second visit to London, so I figured I owed it to myself to look into what I could do to take better pictures while I was there. Had no interest in buying a fancy camera so I focused on a few basics on composition and how to over and underexpose the camera’s auto-exposure, and with my Canon PowerShot, I went.
Not only did I have an amazing time in the UK, but I also managed to take quite a few pretty damn good pictures, considering the camera and lack of experience. I felt it as soon as I started seeing them in the little screen, I was getting hooked and very excited about how much better the images were getting. Something was brewing.
When I got back, two of my best friends who were photography enthusiasts assured me my pictures were great and that now I should come over to the dark-side and join the “camera club,” which was office-speak for DSLR owners club.
Three years ago on this day I scored my used Canon 30D and used lens. Finally a camera I could put in “Manual” mode, like a real pro! So of course I did just that - with too much pride to set my new camera on automatic, I took my first shot and sure enough my first frame was black as night. No I hadn’t forgotten to take the cap off but I hadn’t exactly looked at the meter either :) Maybe 3 frames later I finally took a *picture*, but it was miles from a *photograph*. Anyone can press a button and take a picture, but making a photograph is a whole other matter.
On this 3-year anniversary, I look back at everything I’ve learned and want to take this opportunity to say, “thank you!” When I first thought about putting this blog together, last October, I knew right away I wanted to open with gratitude for those who helped me get so far, so fast.
To Lucio and Ari for your encouragement and your friendship. I’m so glad you pointed me down this road, I can’t even begin to tell you how happy I am to have started this lifetime journey, thanks to you. And you were right, it’s even more expensive than I initially thought :)
To Anthony Jordon for bringing me into the biz and helping me get my feet wet.
To Andre Rowe & Zack Arias for demystifying light and for your generosity in sharing your seemingly infinite wisdom.
Julius Gregorio & Tony Lai for setting the standards so high and continuing to raise the bar.
To the TYE Studios family for always being worth the drive and making me feel like family.
To Mark Wallace for showing me that an IT guy can make a difference in this industry, and believing in me.
To all of you for taking the time to read this - I know this blog entry isn’t a quick blurb or bloated with 10 images from my last epic shoot. That’s part of the point. I’m sharing my journey with you and hopefully this is for those who want to go down that journey too. Who want to put in the effort and read, learn the craft, look, practice, and are always hungry for information that will make them better. Sometimes I may talk about technical things, sometimes I may talk about soft skills, even soft-boiled eggs (I’ll find a way to work that in). And, you’re also welcome to contact me and ask anything you like and I’ll do my best to keep up.
